About ShankoRugs

About ShankoRugs

After nearly 20 years of working in textiles (especially silk) textile artist Sigrun Lara Shanko turned her artistic mind to rug making where she continued to broaden her skills. The original hand tufting technique was learned as a teenager from her mother.  Always breaking the mould, Sigrun created demand for her work, however she had to pursue other things in life and the tufting needle was set aside only to be rediscovered at a later date in rug making.

Sigrun L Shanko has great respect for the Icelandic rugged landscape and now it is her inspiration for ShankoRugs, where fluid forms shift with rich colours in the artist unique timeless hand tufted rugs.

The inspiration for the Sit on Iceland (SoI) collection is the need to have something soft, durable and damp resistant luxury to sit on while roaming in the wilderness of Iceland. When designing Sit on Iceland I looked closer at the earth I was standing on, the formation of moss, the jagged lava and other striking natural characters that make up the unique Icelandic landscape.  The size is ca. 45cm in diameter.

Many have asked me how they could use the Sit on Iceland – mini rugs so I came up with a little list of ideas.

  • Outdoor:: On the glacier  –  in the lava field  –  on the Arctic excursion  –  stargazing in the desert  –  admiring the northern lights  –  on a hike  –  in the tent  –  in the car  –  at the summer house (Iceland)  –  on the patio  –  and so forth.

  • Indoors::  Mini rug on the floor  –  cluster of rugs on the floor  – in front of the roaring fire  –  on the wall  –  in the children’s room  –  for the cat  –  for the dog (btw the animals love the mini rugs)  –  on that hard old bench  —  while meditating  –  to name a few.

New from IHANNA HOME

The Krummi bird is probably the most famous Icelandic design there is. It has spread its wings around the world, been the focuspoint of many articles on Icelandic design and decorates countless Icelandic homes.

The designer, Ingibjörg Hanna Bjarnadóttir, has designed a new edition of the Raven and the coat hanger Not Rudolf, which has also been immensely popular. It is shaped like reindeer horns, perfect for hanging your favorite accessories or clothing or just as a beautiful wall decoration.

The new editions are made of lacquered plywood coated with wood and will undoubtedly please fans of Icelandic design.

Tervetuloa suomalaiset!

Pian aloitamme markkinoinnin suomessa. Tällä hetkellä etsimme kansainvälisempää nimea meidän sivuille. Kaupstaður tarkoittaa alunperin kauppapaikkaa tai pientä kaupunkia.

Kaupstaður.is on islantilaiseen muotoiluun erikoistunut verkkokauppa sekä islantilaisen muotoilun välittäjä suomen jälleenmyyjille.

Maria Creative Design

Á Kaupstað eru yfir 20 metnaðarfullir hönnuðir og alltaf að bætast í hópinn, við viljum endurspegla það besta í íslenskri hönnun.  Á nýafstaðnum HönnunarMars fengum við margar fyrirspurnir og munu bætast við spennandi hönnuðir á næstunni. Það eru spennandi nýjungar framundan hjá flestum þeim hönnuðum sem selja hjá okkur á Kaupstað og eigum við von á því að setja inn nýjar vörur fyrir lok mánaðar.

Allar nýjar fréttir af Kaupstað birtast hjá okkur á blogginu sem og í fréttabréfinu okkar sem við sendum út  reglulega.
