He was an entrepreneur and covered a lot of ground during his life. In 1896 he established the first Icelandic newspaper called Dagskrá (Programme), which he edited along with several other magazines, and a few years later he instigated the establishment of Íslandsbanki (The Bank of Iceland). He was the principal proponent of a national flag for Iceland, an advocate for harnessing Icelandic waterfalls to produce electricity and fought for the underdogs in society which he thought should have the same rights as other citizens. Among all this Einar wrote great poetry and shared his ideals and feelings with his nation through it. In a poem which he wrote during the years 1917 to 1920, he refers to coincidences in life and how they can have several different consequences. A touching phrase from this poem starts thus:

       Eitt bros getur dimmu í dagsljós breytt...

       A smile can bring forth brightness out of darkness...
