Atlantic puffins belong to the Alcidae family of seabirds and are widespread over the Atlantic Ocean. They can be visited in various locations around Iceland for example Lundey, Akurey,Grímsey, Flatey, Látrabjarg and the Westmann Islands. Approximately half of all Icelandic puffins live in the Westmann Islands, which is home to one of the largest puffin colonies in the world. The Atlantic puffin population in Iceland is around 10 million birds, which is around 60% of the world’s total Atlantic puffin population. Most of the year they remain far out at sea but in the middle of April they return to land to breed and raise their offspring. They may live to be more than 30 years old and usually keep the same partner for life. Puffins around Iceland dig long burrows in soft, grassy earth on cliff edges. They lay a single egg and use the same burrow year after year. During breeding season the beaks of adult puffins become brightly coloured but in winter they fade to duller shades of the bright summer colours.
