This sign dates back to the time of settlement of Iceland and is known to have been used by the Vikings as protection against bad spirits, enemies and the anger of chieftains. Viking warriors going into battle would carry a temporary imprint of the symbol on the centre of their forehead. The imprint was made by engraving a lead sheet with the magical sign and pressing the engraving against the skin. Then the following chant was made: “Fjon, I wash off my enemies, theft and anger of rich men.” The Vikings believed that they were thereby endowed with protection, supernatural power and courage to defeat their enemies.
